X-Cost Miracle Cards CMC

Asked by RazortoothMtg 7 years ago

Long story short, I'm building a deck using the new Vial Smasher the Fierce (not in database yet so no linking). Basically I need help determining CMC.

So I have Vial Smasher on the field. Then I cast an X-spell with miracle like Bonfire of the Damned or Entreat the Angels off the miracle cost.

I know usually the CMC of an X spell while it's on the stack is the CMC + X. But if I'm casting it for an alternate cost, what is the CMC?

Game Example: Play Bonfire of the Damned for X=5. Is CMC 6? 11?

With CMC's; X is always 0 except for when it is on the stack (unless you cast it with X=0). Even with Alternate casting costs; that doesn't change the CMC of the card. If you cast Bonfire of the Damned where X=5, the card on the stack will read that X=5 and put that into the CMC on the card. Therefore, the CMC of Bonfire of the Damned on the stack is 11.

Same thing with Blazing Shoal. If you exile Simian Spirit Guide using the Alternate cost on Blazing Shoal; it will read that X=3 and fill it in for X on the CMC while on the stack so therefore in this scenario; the CMC of Blazing Shoal would be 5.
