Would copying Invoke the Firemind allow both effects?

Asked by Eldrazi13 4 years ago

If I used a spell or enchantment to copy Invoke the Firemind would that allow me to deal both X damage and draw X cards? Or would copying it cause the second X to be 0?

When you cast a spell with a choose effect (known as a modal spell), such as Invoke the Firemind , the mode is chosen at the time of casting. When you copy a spell on the stack, you will copy both the value of X and the mode chosen for that spell.

So, your copy will either draw cards or deal damage, depending on what was chosen for the original spell, and the value of X will be the same.

Rule 700.2a The controller of a modal spell or activated ability chooses the mode(s) as part of casting that spell or activating that ability. If one of the modes would be illegal (due to an inability to choose legal targets, for example), that mode can’t be chosen. (See rule 601.2b.)

Rule 706.2. When copying an object, the copy acquires the copiable values of the original object’s characteristics and, for an object on the stack, choices made when casting or activating it (mode, targets, the value of X, whether it was kicked, how it will affect multiple targets, and so on). The “copiable values” are the values derived from the text printed on the object (that text being name, mana cost, color indicator, card type, subtype, supertype, rules text, power, toughness, and/or loyalty), as modified by other copy effects, by its face-down status, and by “as . . . enters the battlefield” and “as . . . is turned face up” abilities that set power and toughness (and may also set additional characteristics). Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied. Emphasis added.
