Would Cathars' Crusade work on Creatures with protection from white?

Asked by Eldrazi13 4 years ago

I know that creatures with protection from white/ monocolored/ whichever can't be targeted by a spell of that color(s). So, if there are multiple creatures on the battlefield, would Cathars' Crusade still work on something like Akroma, Angel of Fury or Progenitus ? Or does it count as targetting each creature it gives a +1/+1 counter to?

Protection protects an object from:

  • Damage: It can't be dealt damage by a source with that property.
  • Equip/Enchant: It can't be equipped or enchanted by permanents with that property.
  • Blocking: It can't be blocked by creatures with that property.
  • Target: It can't be targeted by spells or abilities with that property.

Since Cathars' Crusade does not fall in any of the above categories, a creature with protection from white can receive the +1/+1 counters from its effect. Specifically, Cathars' Crusade does not target nor does it enchant a creature.

I'm MtG the only things that target are spells that specifically say "target" and aura spells on the stack.

@Gidgetimer

Abilities can also target. For example, Kenrith, the Returned King 's ability puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature. An equipment's equip ability also targets which is why you can't equip a creature with shroud. These things are neither spells nor aura spells, but still target.

Hmm was almost sure I put "spells and abilities". That'll teach me to be in a hurry.
