With Solemnity in play, how does the vanishing ability work on cards like Chronozoa?

Asked by insertcleverid 6 years ago

The card would enter with zero counters. The rules says "when the last counter is removed, sacrifice it" not "if there are no counters, sacrifice it." So, when you fail to find a counter to remove, do you still sacrifice it?

Because no counters are ever placed on Chronozoa it is impossible to remove the last one. Therefore it's ability never triggers and doesn't get sacced.

According to http://mtg.gamepedia.com/Vanishing:

Note that the vanishing rules include an "intervening 'if' clause" that stops the counter-removing ability from triggering if there are no time counters on the permanent. This extra clause has minimal impact outside the Magic Online interface, so it doesn't appear in the vanishing reminder text.
