Will Pithing Needle take away an ability that is already out?

Asked by theDers 9 years ago

If I play Banishing Light to remove a non-land permanent and my opponent plays a Pithing Needle on their next turn and names Banishing Light , will this allow my opponent to return the non-land permanent to the battlefield?

Banishing Light Doesn't have an activated ability, it has a triggered ability.

Activated abilities are always shown as having: cost: effect. A cost, followed by an effect w/ a colon separating the two.

Activated abilities always start w/ "when, whenever, or at."

Pithing Needle has no interaction w/ Banishing Light or any card w/ a triggered ability, only cards that have activated abilities.

Moreover, if an activated ability for whatever reason has created a continuous effect, Pithing Needle won't retroactively stop the ability from being activated. It only stops activated abilities from being used after being named by Pithing Needle .

An example of what I mean by that last bit. If someone uses Catapult Master to exile a creature, naming it w/ Pithing Needle won't return the card from exile, after the fact.
