Who wins the game?

Asked by GlockGearhead 9 years ago

I was playing a game at fnm and both of us had 2 life. The enemy guy had an Eidolon of the Great Revel , it was his turn, and he played Shock on me. He said that he won the game however i don't think it is so because of the wording on the eidolon.

Thanks in advance!

When he cast shock, it would have triggered the Eidolon's ability which would go on the stack above the shock. It would resolve and deal him 2 damage. He would lose the game for having 0 or less life before Shock resolved, and Shock would be removed from the stack when he left the game. You win.

Short answer: You are correct. You won the game.

Long answer: When he casts Shock , the Eidolon trigger is put onto the stack. Before the shock can resolve, the trigger has to resolve as it was put onto the stack after the Shock, and the stack resolves in reverse order. Eidolon trigger resolves, they take 2 damage putting their health to zero. Now before shock can resolve, you receive priority. Before that can occur, state based actions are checked, his life total is now zero as a result of the 2 damage trigger, and the match ends in your favor before another spell could be cast.
