Who To Target For Enchantment Sacrifice?

Asked by TheSkelton 8 years ago

Say my opponent casts Pacifism on my creature. If I then cast Abzan Advantage, should I target me or my opponent if I want Pacifism to be sacrificed?

If your opponent cast Pacifism, enchanting your creature, your opponent still controls the enchantment itself. To get rid of it (Assuming Pacifism is your opponent's only enchantment on the battlefield), you would want to cast Abzan Advantage targeting your opponent.

As a further question then, if the enchantment was instead a Stasis Snare (or similar card), would the creature returned to the battlefield be eligible for the bolster effect? I am guessing not since the Abzan Advantage needs to finish resolving before the Stasis Snare's triggered ability resolves, correct?

Actually, you are incorrect on that. There was a question some time ago where someone asked what happened when player 1's Hangarback Walker was exiled under Stasis Snare and player 1 cast Abzan Advantage

The creature would be a legal creature for the bolster effect because Stasis Snare's only triggered ability is when it first enters the battlefield. It's ability after that is a continuous effect that simply stops when it leaves the battlefield, immediately returning the exiled creature to play. And even if it's a 0/0, Abzan Advantage is still resolving and state based actions aren't checked yet. The bolster effect will happen and you can make your 0/0 a 1/1 before SBA's are checked.

However, the older exile cards like Oblivion Ring, Fiend Hunter, and Detention Sphere would not work because those do have triggered abilities when leaving the battlefield.

Actually, Stasis Snare has an ETB ability that creates an exile effect with a duration. As soon as that duration is over, the exiled creature returns to the battlefield. The return doesn't involve a triggered ability (unlike Oblivion Ring, for example).

Therefore, the creature is returned immediately when Stasis Snare is exiled, meaning it's on the battlefield in time for the bolster portion of Abzan Advantage's effect.

Note that if the return did rely on a trigger, then it wouldn't happen until after Abzan Advantage finished resolving.
