Whip of Erebos and Ojutai Exemplars...Will the OE stay once brought back from the graveyard?

Asked by Cookieboy1221 8 years ago

How would Ojutai Exemplars work with Whip of Erebos? I bring back OE from graveyard and play a noncreature spell and exile it and bring it back tapped. Will it come back tapped or will it stay in exile? If it does come back tapped will it still exile at end of turn?

It will be exiled and return as described in the ability text, and it won't be exiled at EOT.

There are two factors at play here:

First, Whip's ability sets up a replacement effect that applies any time the target card would move to a zone other than exile. However, OE's ability exiles OE, so the replacement effect doesn't apply.

Second, when an object changes zones, it becomes a new object with no memory of or relation to its previous iterations. It will no longer be affected by any delayed triggers or continuous effects that applied specifically to one of its older iterations. Therefore, Whip's EOT exile effect won't apply to the "new" OE.

Thanks Epochalyptik. This gives me an idea of a new deck.
