Which combat damage happens first, creature or player?

Asked by Nsuper 4 years ago

I am usually good with rules, but this one is stumping me. So in the 2-player game, side one has

2 Lord of the Accursed, 1 Death Baron, 1 Reassembling Skeleton, and 1 standard 2/2 zombie token

and they want to attack all out on side two, which has

2 Basilica Screecher, and 1 Wall of Limbs with 9 +1/+1 counters and the enchantment Dying Wish.

The problem comes with what order the damage is dealt. If creature damage is dealt first, then Dying Wish would kill player one by the deathtouch given by Death Baron. Yet if player damage is dealt first, then player one would win. If both damage are simultaneous, then each player would lose; if this is the case, who would win?

Damage is simultaneous. Player one wins.

Both the Wall of Limbs and the player are dealt damage at the same time. State based actions are checked, and player two and Wall of Limbs die. The triggered ability from the Dying Wish (that would kill player one, if it were to resolve) never gets a chance to resolve, because the player that controls the ability loses the game before that point.

However, if Player Two realizes they're going to die (due to damage being simultaneous), and they have the mana open, they could pre-emptively take out Player One by sacrificing the Wall of Limbs to its own ability.

You didn't say, but I'm assuming in your hypothetical that Player One has enough unblocked damage to kill Player Two.
