When I equip a creature with an equipment already equipped on something else, does it become unattached first?

Asked by MiIo 3 years ago

Playing against Lightning Greaves equipped on a creature I had Astral Slide and New Perspectives and 7 cards in hand, two of which had cycling. My opponent tried to equip the Greaves to another creature, in response I cycled and used Astral Slide’s effect on this second creature. Now that the equip ability lost it’s target what happens to the equipment? Is it still equipped to the first creature?

The creature is still equipped. When you activate an equip ability, the equip will attach itself to the other creature. That's it. Activating an equip ability doesn't directly unequip.

Hope this helps!!

Relevant rule:

  • 301.5b ...If an effect attempts to attach an Equipment to an object that can’t be equipped by it, the Equipment doesn’t move.

(trimmed to relevant portion)

Additionally, the equip ability requires a target. If none of an ability's targets are legal when it goes to resolve, it "fizzles" and does nothing.

  • 608.2b ...If all its targets, for every instance of the word “target,” are now illegal, the spell or ability doesn’t resolve.

(trimmed to relevant portion)
