When happens first, "protection from" damage removal or regular strike?

Asked by vic 4 years ago

Sorry, the brackets function for card names is messed up right now. Here's what I'm after:

I attack with a [[Boros Swiftblade (1/2 Double Strike) equipped with a Bonesplitter (+2/+0). My opponent blocks it with an Oversoul of Dusk (5/5 Protection from Red).

Does trample damage get through?

It's a question of WHEN "all damage from red sources is reduced to zero" happens. It seems to me that the damage from first strike is reduced to zero before regular strike hits, therefore no trample damage. Since a double-striker is capable of killing a small enough blocker before the blocker deals damage, this seems consistent to me, but I'm not sure.

Right, you can't assign any trample damage to your opponent.

In order to assign trample damage to the defending player, first you have to assign at least lethal damage to the blocking creatures. In your example the 3 damage dealt by boros swiftblade in the first strike damage step is prevented, so when you get to the regular combat damage step you still just have 3 damage to assign to a creature with 5 toughness and no other damage marked on it.

That's weird about the card tagging. I wonder what's going on.

I kept getting a message saying the number of left and right brackets did not match. But they definitely did. I tried it different ways, but no luck.

Same here. I posted about it in the bugs and feature requests forum topic and it got fixed.

Ah. Good to know that that exists.

Rhadamanthus I meant Swiftblade Vindicator which has Trample, not Boros Swiftblade. Surprised no one called me on that.

Well, I guess that's one of the reasons why the card linking feature is so important.
