When does the Draw Trigger Happen with Gitrog + Fetchland?

Asked by Leifis 6 years ago

My friend and I had an interesting discussion about when the draw trigger happens with The Gitrog Monster + a fetchland (for example Verdant Catacombs).

If The Gitrog Monster is on the field and I activate a Fetchland's Sacrifice ability, do I draw a card BEFORE or AFTER I fetch a land and shuffle my library?

For some reason I always assumed I should draw before I search and shuffle my library and my friend raised a really good point about the ordering of the stack and that the draw trigger from The Gitrog Monster should happen after the player searches the library and shuffles.

This basically comes down to when Vampiric Tutor should be casted on the draw trigger. In theory, if the draw trigger happens after the library is searched and shuffled and a land is placed, the player would have one extra mana to spend on something such as Vampiric Tutor.

Thanks for any help/clarification!

You draw before you fetch.

When you activate the fetch land you announce the activation, pay the costs, put the ability on the stack, and then you would receive priority again and triggers that happened since the last time a player received priority (such as the trigger from Gitrog when you sacrificed Verdant Catacombs to pay the cost of its ability) will then go on the stack above the fetch.

Think of it this way - with an activated ability, everything listed before the colon has to happen to completion before anything after the colon can occur. You have to pay all costs in full before enjoying the effect. So the land is sacrificed before the ability is even resolving, meaning you get the card draw before you're searching.
