when do spells fizzle?

Asked by Sismir 6 years ago

me and my magic crew often encounters this and we are unsure what would happen, an example is the only creature on the field is a Silver Myr and a Copper Myr a player cast Terminate to kill one of them. to respond the controller of the myr cast Unsummon, will the Terminate need to have a new target or will it just fizzle and hit the gravyard?

A spell (or ability) fizzles when it attempts to resolve but all of its targets are illegal.

You can Redirect Terminate after its original target is Unsummoned, for example. You need an effect that allows you to change the target; you can't just change it at will because the original target is illegal.

I'm sorry to say, but 'fizzle' is not a legitimate term in Magic, I believe you mean 'countered on resolution for failing to have a legal target' not quote as catchy, but there you go.
