What is considered a mana ability?

Asked by Bovine073 7 years ago

I have been contemplating Suppression Field and I started to wonder about what is considered a mana ability.

Springleaf Drum is a mana ability (I think). But is Krark-Clan Ironworks a mana ability?

(other modern examples as well, can't think of any off of the top of my head)

Thanks

605. Mana Abilities

  • 605.1. Some activated abilities and some triggered abilities are mana abilities, which are subject to special rules. Only abilities that meet either of the following two sets of criteria are mana abilities, regardless of what other effects they may generate or what timing restrictions (such as Activate this ability only any time you could cast an instant) they may have.

-605.1a An activated ability is a mana ability if it meets all of the following criteria: it doesnt have a target, it could put mana into a players mana pool when it resolves, and its not a loyalty ability. (See rule 606, Loyalty Abilities.)

-605.1b A triggered ability is a mana ability if it meets all of the following criteria: it doesnt have a target, it triggers from the resolution of an activated mana ability (see rule 106.11a), and it could put mana into a players mana pool when it resolves.

TL;DR

Ability doesn't have a target, puts mana into player's pool, and isn't a loyalty ability.

A mana ability is any ability that meets these criteria:

  1. It doesn't target anything.
  2. It isn't a loyalty ability.
  3. It would add mana to a player's mana pool when it resolves.
  4. If it's a triggered ability, it triggers only from another mana ability.

Both Springleaf Drum and Krark-Clan Ironworks have mana abilities.
