What if King Macar, the Gold-Cursed's ability fails to exile?

Asked by nobu_the_bard 7 years ago

What happens if King Macar, the Gold-Cursed fails in various ways? Are there scenarios where I can get a gold token even if the creature fails to be exiled? I'm not entirely clear on the "if you do" part of the ability.

  • What happens if the ability resolves successfully, but the creature doesn't get exiled? Perhaps because of the Commander replacement rule moving the creature to the command zone. (I assume if the creature somehow had "cannot be exiled" it would have the same result as this.)
  • What happens if the ability fails to exile the creature because it becomes an invalid target? Perhaps it got hexproof or was sacrificed in response.
  • What happens if the controller of the target creature changes while Macar's ability is on the stack?

Thanks in advance guys! I won't be able to check the answers until this afternoon, so if an admin wants to flag the right answer before I get back feel free. : )

If the creature isn't exiled then the you wouldn't get a gold token, however if they were exiled then moved elsewhere you would.

  1. You will get a token. Even if the actual zone the creature ends up in is different, you fulfilled everything else.

  2. No token. Key words on the card are "...you may exile target creature. If you do..."

  3. Control of a creature does not matter. You can easily target your own creatures or Makar himself and you will still get a token.

  1. For preforming the action of exiling, similar to destroying, it doesn't matter what zone the creature ends up in as long as you preform the action or a modified version thereof. For a commander you would get the token, for the ability that does not exist "can't be exiled," you could not preform the action so you would not get the token.

  2. If the sole target of any spell or ability becomes illegal the spell or ability is countered for lack of a legal target, the whole thing fails.

  3. Because King Macar says "You may exile," the change of countroller may convince you not to. The choice is made on resolution and whether or not you get a gold token depends on your choice. The change of controller doesn't prevent this, but can change your mind.
