What if a Planeswalker is alsoa creature? How is damage dealt

Asked by Kjartan 9 years ago

It's my opponents turn. I control a Karn, Silver Golem and a Garruk Relentless  Flip, Which he chooses to attack him with a flyer. I then play Argent Mutation changing Garruk to an artifact, then to a creature with karn... WTF, I have no idea what's going to happen :/

How is the damage dealt my Garruk, and why?

What would happen If he attacked me and I choose to block with garruk?

WTF? O.o

Damage dealt to a planeswalker results in that many loyalty counters being removed from it. In this case, this is true.

The only time this is not true is with planeswalkers with loyalty abilites that turn themselves into creatures, such as Gideon, Champion of Justice or Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker.

In both cases, the planeswalkers here don't lose loyalty when they take damage as a creature, but for different reasons.

Gideon is still a planeswalkers while he is a creature, so logically he would lose loyalty when he takes damage. However, he says to prevent all damage that would be dealt to him this turn, so he cant lose loyalty.

Sarkhan ceases to be a planeswalker while he is a creature. When damage is dealt to him as a creature, he cannot lose loyalty.

If your Garruk were turned into a creature with Karn, Silver Golem, it would be a 4/4 creature. When damage would be dealt to it, Garruk would lose that much loyalty just as normal, because he doesn't have an effect that would save him while he is a creature.

Since Garruk is still a Planeswalker, the attack is still valid. The flyer will do damage to Garruk and it will remove loyalty counters since he is a Planeswalker. It will also be marked on him since he is a creature. If the damage done either reduces him to 0 loyalty counters or is equal to or greater than his toughness he will be destroyed.

Note that reducing a planeswalker's loyalty to 0 does not cause destruction. The planeswalker is simply put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action.
