What happens when you gain control of something via enchantment, then the enchantment leaves play?

Asked by Zidantur 6 years ago

For instance, Annex lets you control an opponents land. What happens if they destroy the enchantment or it is exiled? There is no clause saying "for as long as you control annex".

Annex is one example, but the question applies to other similar cards as well.

Thanks!

For any permanent-type card (creature, land, enchantment, artifact, planeswalker), effects from any of its static abilities (i.e. abilities that aren't activated or triggered) will only apply for as long as it's on the battlefield. In your situation the land will return to its previous controller when Annex leaves the battlefield.

This is different from an effect generated by a resolving spell or ability. For example, the permanents you take control of after casting a Blatant Thievery will stay under your control until some other effect specifically makes you lose control of them (including making them leave the battlefield).

That makes sense. I figured as much, but couldn't seem to find it in the rules. It would be pretty powerful if you could just blink/flicker the enchantment to steal all the lands!

Thank you

I want to slightly correct something I said for the benefit of others who read this later, because I think I tried to get too specific and accidentally left a big hole:

To be clear, any ability on a permanent-type card will only apply for as long as it's on the battlefield unless it specifically says it works in another zone (or would only make sense in another zone) or unless an activated or triggered ability of the permanent created some kind of static effect as it resolved.
