What happens when turning manifested sorceries, face up?

Asked by TheMagi 7 years ago

So I recently learned that if a manifested card would leave the battlefield, it must be turned face up. So I have two questions.

1: If I use Man-o'-War to return a manifested instant or sorcery to my hand and it turns face up, will it still be returned to my hand?

2: When a manifested card I control leaves the battlefield and is turned face up, does it's ability activate at that point? For example, something like Brine Elemental. Say that it were returned to hand or flickered. Also if I have Mastery of the Unseen on the field, does turning up any facedown card when it leaves the battlefield, activate the lifegain trigger?

Manifested cards with with non-permanent card type are, under no circumstance, turned face up. If an effect would instruct you to do so, you are to reveal the card and leave it face down.

The revealing of a facedown card (manifest or morph) when it leaves the battlefield does not trigger abilities that would trigger when that or any permanent would turn face up. The reason it is revealed to to prove to your opponent that you cast a card with morph (for manifested cards, it is revealed so that players do not only reveal some face down cards, aka it avoids confusion).

TL;DR - No Brine Elemental, no lifegain

  1. A face down non-permanent card cannot be turned face up on the battlefield. However, when you bounce it back to your hand, it returns to its default state which includes being face up. Off the battlefield, all card are in their default state so it'll simply return to your hand, nothing more, nothing less.

  2. No. A cards ability only normally functions while it's on the battlefield. If you bounce it, it's no longer a permanent and therefore its ability will do nothing. Brine Elemental will not have its ability trigger. Mastery of the Unseen's ability triggers when a permanent you control is turned face up. A permanent is a card (or token) that's on the battlefield. If you bounce a face down card to your hand it's no longer a permanent and therefore does not trigger Mastery of the Unseen.

You don't turn the manifested card face-up when it changes zones, but you do reveal it. It's important to make this distinction because the two actions have different meanings for the rules of the game. Nothing special happens when the card gets revealed.

707.9. If a face-down permanent moves from the battlefield to any other zone, its owner must reveal it to all players as he or she moves it. If a face-down spell moves from the stack to any zone other than the battlefield, its owner must reveal it to all players as he or she moves it. If a player leaves the game, all face-down permanents and spells owned by that player must be revealed to all players. At the end of each game, all face-down permanents and spells must be revealed to all players.
