What happens to a creature enchanted by Animate Dead if targeted by Otherworldly Journey?

Asked by metalmustaine 8 years ago

does the creature go to the grave since Animate Dead got detached?

1) The creature is targeted by Otherworldly Journey and it resolves, exiling said creature.

2) State based actions are checked and Animate Dead is put into its owner's graveyard which triggers its ability.

3) It attempts to resolve by forcing the sacrifice of enchanted creature but fizzles as the creature is no longer on the battlefield. (Once a card is sent to a new zone, it has no history of its previous existence).

4) At the beginning of the next end step, the Delayed Triggered Ability from Otherworldly Journey goes on the stack, bringing the exiled creature back under it's owner's control (not yours, unless you own said creature), with a +1/+1 counter.

%) And then play continues as normal.

The creature stays in play.

What happens is that the creature gets exiled as Otherworldly Journey with a delayed trigger to bring it back. When state-based actions get checked Animate Dead gets moved to the graveyard since it's an aura not currently attached to a creature. At the beginning of the next end step the delayed trigger happens and the creature re-enters play. As far as the game is concerned, this is a brand-new creature entering the battlefield.

Note that the sacrifice will not fizzle because it doesn't target anything. Rather, it will simply do nothing because the creature is no longer on the battlefield.
