What happens if you equip a Creature that has been stolen with Dominate?

Asked by Argy 7 years ago

In a Commander game tonight my partner stole a Creature with Dominate.

Everyone at the table was trying to say that, if its owner equipped it with Swiftfoot Boots in his next main phase, he would get the Creature back.

Is that right?

No.

First, Dominate only targets while on the stack. Giving the creature hexproof after control has been taken won't do anything to change who currently controls it. Besides, hexproof is based on control, not ownership.

Next, you can only equip a creature you control. The creature's owner wouldn't have been able to attach Swiftfoot Boots without a way to directly attach equipment (I.e., not the equip ability).

No.

First, giving the Dominated creature shroud after the fact won't retroactively "counter" Dominate. This would be different with an aura like Control Magic and giving the creature protection from blue. In that case, tha aura would be put into its owner's graveyard and the control-changing effect would end.

Second, the creature's owner can't equip it, as he is no longer its controller. You can only equip creatures you control.

Just so you realise, Swiftfoot Boots gives Hexproof, not Shroud.
