What happens if Jodah, Archmage Eternal is destroyed while using his ability.

Asked by The_Epic_Dog 5 years ago

I had Jodah, Archmage Eternal out. I used his ability to cast Enter the Infinite for wubrg. My friend then destroyed Jodah while Enter the Infinite was still on the stack, and said that this would cause Enter the Infinite to fizzle. Is this true? if so, could I have spent more mana in order to cast it normally while it was still on the stack?

You've been duped by your friend.

Any spell that already been cast and paid for will still resolve even if Jodah somehow dies. There's no window for your friend to deny you for casting Enter the Infinite for WUBRG.

It fizzles if its targets somehow becomes illegal (which it won't because no targets).

Or your friend can simply counter it. If he doesn't then you've just Entered Infinity.

In fact, if you cast something like Altar's Reap with his ability (maybe you like spending too much mana) and sacrifice him as the adit iona cost, you'll still be able to spend one of each color of mana, and the spell will still resolve, because the cost was locked in and doesn't need him to stick around.

Basically, once you've declared you're casting a spell (Enter the Infinite in this case), that process can't be interrupted until the spell is on the stack and paid for, at which point nothing's going to "undo" what you've paid for the spell. The closest your opponent could get to mucking with what you've paid for the spell is counters like Mana Leak, and those merely add another cost that has to be paid.
