What happen when using Wasteland with no legal target in Competitive REL?

I've been told you sacrifice the land as part of the cost and even if there is no legal target on the board it's considered sacrifice. So can you really just sacrifice the Wasteland without any legal target when you want to. IE with Dingus Egg you could kill someone without any legal target for this play.

Far-fetched but still was wondering.

The fix for an illegal play is to back up the game to before the play was made, unless backing up would be too complicated or cause other problems related to decisions made between the original mistake and when it was first noticed. The exact penalty for an illegal play depends on the specific situation, but in the vast majority of cases it would be a Warning for a Game Rule Violation.

Not sure what you're getting at with the Dingus Egg thing, but whatever it is it wouldn't work.

If a spell or ability requires legal targets, you can't begin to cast or activate it unless you can name a legal target for it. You can't name zero targets unless the spell or ability allows you to legally do that, and you can never name an illegal target. These things constitute an illegal action, and the game will be rewound to just before the action was taken.

The fact that the sacrifice is part of the cost is irrelevant. You can't pay a cost to take an illegal action; the entire event is rewound. You can't force an illegal action to pay a cost or trigger an ability.

The Dingus Egg reference was simply an extrapolation due to one of my friend being force to sacrifice the Wasteland in competitive play at Side Event of a GP on Turn 2 while the opponent only had a Mountain and him only the Wasteland.

We had an argument about it but Judge ruled the sacrifice was forced since part of the cost. I believe that it was impossible to do so since you need legal target to active the ability and pay the cost.

Doesn't Wasteland always have a legal target, since it is itself a non-basic land?

MSU_Iced_Z you are correct. Wasteland can target itself, however at competitive REL a judge SHOULD NOT tell the opponent about this unless asked.

If the opponent just wanted to sac it the judge should tell them that they need to choose a legal target for the ability to sac it. As a player they have some responsibility to know how the rules work.

I think the big question is what the Wasteland player said. If they said "Activate Wasteland targeting Mountain," it should be rewound. If they just said "Activate Wasteland," doesn't it default to the only legal target?

It doesn't. If some one doesn't declare a legal target they have to declare a legal target or the judge may rewind it.
