What exactly is legal in modern? Is urzas tower or basalt monolith legal?

I have a deck tech but not exactly sure if it's legal or not in modern.

Link your cards

Urza's Tower

Basalt Monolith

Modern is just 8th edition and forward and just a list of banned cards. I think this question is going to be moved somewhere.

Please link your cards. There is a formatting guide at the bottom of the page.

Basalt Monolith

Urza's Tower

You can check the legality page on the gatherer which will tell you if they are legal in a format.

Basalt Monolith is not legal in modern as it was printed after 8th edition.

Urza's Tower is legal in modern as it was printed in 9th edition.

Any card that has been printed (or reprinted) since 8th Edition/Mirrodin is playable in Modern unless it has been banned. The Modern banlist (and definition of the format) can be found here. The name "Modern" actually refers to the change they made to the card layout when they printed 8th Ed. and Mirrodin, thus saying that cards with the "modern" layout were playable. I'm not sure how the change in M15 affects this.

Urza's Tower and Basalt Monolith both have reprinting with modern boarders in 9th Ed. and Commander 2013 respectively so I believe they're playable.

Please remember to link cards you're asking questions about. If you need help doing so check out the formatting tips page here.

Basalt Monolith is not legal. It was last printed in Revised. Remember that secondary products like Commander, Conspiracy, etc. only affect eternal formats. Modern is not an eternal format, so it only includes cards from core sets and blocks from 8th Edition and onward.

For ban list info, always go to the format pages on wizards.com. You can also check Gatherer for individual cards.

After checking into it I could be wrong about Basalt Monolith, as it was only reprinted in a Commander set and that doesn't seem to be listed on WotC's Modern page.

@Epochalyptik: Too right, I was halfway through investigating all the ways I was wrong when you already had it up there for me. Here I was going to post something with links to Wikis and maybe a slideshow, but you've covered the important details succinctly.
