What exactly does Brutal Expulsion target?

When casting a modal spell, you must choose the mode up-front. So casting Brutal Expulsion in its first mode, the target would be a spell on the stack or a creature on the battlefield. If you were casting Brutal Expulsion in its second mode, the target would be a target creature or planeswalker on the battlefield.

If a spell is returned to its owners hand, its removed from the stack. The spell isnt countered, but it wont resolve. If a copy of a spell is returned to a hand this way, the copy will cease to exist the next time state-based actions are performed.

The second mode will exile the target creature or planeswalker if it would be put into the graveyard this turn for any reason, not just due to lethal damage. The exile effect applies to that permanent even if Brutal Expulsion deals no damage to it (due to a prevention effect) or Brutal Expulsion deals damage to a different creature or planeswalker (due to a redirection effect).

And if both are chosen then it targets a creature on the battlefield or spell on the stack, and a creature or planeswalker on the battlefield.

Also note that if choosing both modes, you have the capability to target the same creature with both modes if you so desire.

So any spell being cast or any creature already 'currently' on the battlefield?

Does that 'spell' term exclude any card types from Brutal Expulsion?

Any card or copy of a card on the stack is considered a "Spell". You can target any spell except if the spell on top of the stack has Split-Second which stops players from casting spells or activating abilities until that spell has resolved.

And yes, any creature as long as it is a legal target. Illegal targets would be creatures with hexproof/shroud or protection from and/or .

And no exclusions, every non-land card on the stack is a spell, it doesn't matter what type the spell is.

A card does what it says, no more and no less. Brutal Expulsion doesn't specify any particular card type for the "target spell" so that means the type doesn't matter.
