What constitutes 'same name'

Asked by Fleetfiend 9 years ago

This is a question related to the Legend rule (I.e. if two legendary cards of the same name enter the battlefield, all but one must be sacrificed).

Does this count for legendary characters that, though they have the same 'name', are different cards? Particularly, could I theoretically have Ob Nixilis, the Fallen, Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath and Ob Nixilis, Unshackled all on the field at once?

A card's name is the words in the upper-left corner. All the cards you listed have a different name, and so yes, you may have them all out on the battlefield at the same time without any complications.

Note that the Legendary rule is different than the Planeswalker uniqueness rule, which looks at a planeswalker's subtype. You could not control Liliana of the Veil and Liliana Vess, for example, as they both have the subtype "Liliana".
