What can Research grab in EDH?

Asked by Chadarnook 7 years ago

If I cast Research during a game of EDH, could I choose more than one of the same card to shuffle into my library?

Can I choose cards that don't match my general's color identity?

Normally Research will do nothing on resolution. From MTGCommander.net:

  1. Abilities which refer to other cards owned outside the game (Wishes, Spawnsire, Research, Ring of Ma'ruf) do not function in Commander without prior agreement on their scope from the playgroup.

If you're playgroup allows it, it's up to them to determine the rules as to what it can grab. I'd suggest preparing a sideboard, and getting it approved by the group, so that you don't have to go searching through a binder on resolution. This should also make them more likely to agree.

Also note that Research, as a split card, gets it's color identity from both halves, making it blue, red, green. I knew someone who tried running Development in his Izzet deck.

I know this question has already been answered but I just wanted to expand on the cards you can get. If your playgroup allows wishboards, you must still follow the proper deck construction rules. This means that you can't get cards outside of your commander's colour identity and you can't get duplicate cards.
