When playing Wharf Infiltrator the last ability says whenever you discard a creature card. Does this me that you have to discard a creature card or when one of your creatures dies.

"Discarding" is a term for taking a card in your hand and put it into the graveyard. Some effects, like Madness, allow you to discard cards into exile, where the wording tells you that it still counts as discarding the card, even though it doesn't end up in exile.

"Dieing" is another term with a defined meaning, which is a creature going from the battlefield to the graveyard.

Since a card can never be both in your hand and the battlefield, it can never be discarded from the battlefield. The common sense interpretation will get you a long way, seeing as you already phrased your question in a way that suggests that dieing and discarding are two entirely seperate events.
