Tainted Remedy + Wall of Shards

Asked by SirFowler 7 years ago

I was wondering on how cumulative upkeep works exactly. With Wall of Shards, it gives your opponent life, but with Tainted Remedy, it acts as a replacement effect saying that they lose life instead. Would the Wall of Shards have to be sacrificed since the opponent didn't gain the life? Or would the opponent lose the amount of life instead? I checked the gatherer, but I didn't see anything about replacement effects for cumulative upkeep.

It's possible for a replacement effect to alter the result of paying a cost. For example: Rest in Peace will cause a creature sacrificed to Goblin Bombardment to go to exile instead of the graveyard. In your example your opponent will lose life when you pay the cumulative upkeep cost for Wall of Shards.

As long as you choose to pay the cumulative upkeep, Wall of Shards will stay on the battlefield. Replacement effects don't change your choice of paying the cost, they just modify the result. The opponent will cumulatively lose life.
