Vastwood Hyrda and Nature's Panoply

Asked by Ravenking 8 years ago

I was playing a game and my opponent sent my 5/5 Vastwood Hydra to the exile zone using Skybind. At the end step I return it to the battlefield. Since that happened, it became a 0/0 because it left the battlefield. I then played Nature's Panoply onto Vastwood Hydra as he returned to the battlefield. Would that work?

No. Any time a player would receive priority, state based actions (SBA) are checked in which no player may respond with spells or activated abilities. State Based Actions include checking if creatures have 0 or less toughness.

Because Vastwood Hydra enters the battlefield as a 0/0, state based actions are checked and it is immediately sent to your graveyard as part of the SBA before you would have a chance to cast Nature's Panoply.

Note: Because Vastwood Hydra is exiled via Skybind, it doesn't "die" so the +1/+1 counters aren't distributed.

Also Note: If you have a Bloodspore Thrinax on the battlefield (with X +1/+1 counters) as Vastwood Hydra returns to play from exile, the +1/+1 counters that are placed on the Hydra are a replacement effect, modifying how this creature enters the battlefield. In this scenario, your hydra would remain on the battlefield because it would have +1/+1 counters on it equal to that on Bloodspore Thrinax. Then you could cast Nature's Panoply targeting your Vastwood Hydra.

Rulings to support:

704.3. Whenever a player would get priority (see rule 116, Timing and Priority), the game checks for any of the listed conditions for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event...etc

704.5f If a creature has toughness 0 or less, its put into its owners graveyard. Regeneration cant replace this event.

just so i'm clear- when a creature with enchantments and counters is exiled with something like skybind or other "temporary" exiling effects (ie gunpower mage, etc), that creature will lose all of those attached enchantments and counters. yes?

a similar question would be- if I exile someone's commander (in EDH), is it exiled or returned to the commander zone?Thansk

Correct. If a creature is exiled, any counters cease to exist and any auras enchanted on it will be put into your graveyard as a state based action.

Also, the controller of the exiled commander may choose to either have it be exiled or choose to have it go to the command zone instead.

So does that mean then you can "overthrow" oblivion ring or detention sphere for commanders?

Essentially yes. Playing an Oblivion Ring against a commander is wasting the card because the commander can just go back to the command zone. Then the O-ring will be in play exiling nothing.
