Using Dromar's Cavern like a Lotus Petal

Asked by Eboksba 9 years ago

The title says it all. I read an interesting article about using the Lairs as a form of Lotus Petal .

Does the primary section where you need to return a land back into play count as a COST or as an effect? If it is an effect, then the Lair series is a tri-colored selection of Lotus Petal s. Otherwise, it's still decent.

Can someone pull up a rule where this would be delineated as either? Thanks!

No need for a rule. It is clearly a triggered ability that can be responded to by tapping for mana. Also the gatherer ruling (not an actual rule, more like an answer to a FAQ) is:

10/4/2004: If you don't want to unsummon a land, you can play this card then tap it for mana before the enters the battlefield ability resolves. You may then choose to sacrifice it instead of unsummoning a land

The reason Lairs are infinitely worse than Lotus Petal is that Lairs use up your land drop for the turn and the petal doesn't.

It's a triggered ability, so yes, you can play it, tap it, and sac it.

That said, unless you don't have any other lands in play that give you the colour mana you need, you're almost always better off by tapping a land for mana, and then bouncing that land instead - same amount of mana created, but now you have a tri land in play.

The land drop thing is quite significant. Thanks for the ruling.
