Using a Socery to Copy Docent of Perfection

Asked by halander1 7 years ago

So, say that I have Docent of Perfection  Flip which has a triggered ability relted to sorceries, and I cast Saheeli's Artistry, copying the Docent of Perfection  Flip, does the sorcery resolve, then I get 2 wizard tokens, or do I get one Docent of perfection as the activated ability is somehow about the sorcery on the stack ???

Firstly, Docent of Perfection  Flip has a triggered ability, not an activated one.

Casting and Resolving are not the same thing and do not happen simultaneously. When you cast Saheeli's Artistry, Docent of Perfection  Flip's ability triggers, and goes on the stack on top of your spell. It will resolve first, creating the 1/1 blue Human Wizard.

Then, your spell will resolve, creating a token copy of Docent of Perfection  Flip. This token's ability will not trigger, because it was not in play when you cast an instant or sorcery spell. Nor does it retroactively trigger.

Additionally, if you Saheeli's Artistry copies Docent of Perfection  Flip, the token cannot transform. If you already have 2 wizards on the field when you cast Artistry, Docent's ability will resolve before Artistry transforming it. It's still a valid target despite the transformation so Artistry still resolves fine, but gives you a copy of Final Iteration instead.
