Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and its efficacy

Asked by 9-lives 4 years ago

I'm sorry if these questions have been asked before but I can't seem to find the right questions that have been answered. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth: can I use this card to make all of my lands basically dual-lands? Like if I cast this card on an Island, does it give both blue and black mana? Also, if I cast this card, does it last for the entire game for all of my land cards after I play it? Or does it resolve only with the current lands I have?

the key words are "in addition to its other types" so yeah if you have an island, it will be able to tap for black or blue mana. urborg has whats called a "static effect" meaning that it is always applying itself, and will apply to all lands as they enter. its ability does not "resolve" because it does not use the stack.

also, you would not "cast this card on an island". Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is not a spell, and is therefore not "cast". it also does not target.

But is it Black OR Blue mana that the card can be tapped for, or BOTH blue and black mana? For instance, say I want to cast Fathom Feeder, would that only require one blue land card that has Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth affecting that blue land card?

reading the card explains the card. a card having multiple types does not magically mean it can produce more mana. ever heard of Watery Grave? thats basically what your island becomes with an urborg out. it can be tapped for blue OR black.

It's important to realize that Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is also a land (that's why you don't "cast" it), which means it benefits from its own ability and can tap for black mana.

All gaining a basic land type like "Swamp" does is give it that ability to tap for that basic type's mana, and count as that type of land if something is counting "number of ___ you control" (like Mutilate, which counts your Swamps, including any lands that aren't normally Swamps but are now thanks to Urborg) or effects like Landwalk (Urborg means all your opponents now have Swamps, so if you've got things with Swampwalk, such as via Filth, they're unblockable as long as Urborg is on the battlefield).
