Undergrowth Champion given trample?

Asked by Phat_Shadow 7 years ago

So here was my situation and now I'm curious:

I had Undergrowth Champion that had 6 counters and a Sword of the Animist on it making it a 9/9. "The champ" was also given trample by Mina and Denn, Wildborn then I attacked with him...animist triggers another landfall making the champ 10/10.

My opponent then double blocks the champ with Weapons Trainer and Kor Bladewhirl.

My main question is how much damage goes to the opponent? I'm clear that blocking damage is assigned first which would cause the champ to loose 2 of his +1/+1 counters...but since that happens as damage is done in creature combat how much damage do the 2 blockers absorb before the rest goes over to the opponent?

Possibility A) Champ looses the counters first (or in between creature combat and player trample absorbtion) then the 8 damages is given to the blockers first. Blockers absorb 4 damage then the opponent takes the other 4.

Possibility B) Champ looses counters after damage is done hitting the blockers for the full 10, blockers absorb 4 leaving the opponent to take 6, THEN champ goes down to 8/8.

I'm thinking A is correct and the champ looses the counters before the damage is swung over to the player but I'm not certain.

Assuming the opponent does not have an equipment for Weapons Trainer's ability or any other shenanigans, he will be dealt 6 damage. Possibility B is correct.

1/ When combat damage is assigned by a creature with trample, you have to assign at least lethal damage to each blocker before you can assign any to the defender.

2/ With 4 toughness on the opponent's creatures, you will be able to assign up to 6 damage to the opponent.

3/ Combat damage is then dealt simultaneously the way it was assigned, so Champ will lose counters only after (or technically, in the midst of) doing its full 10 damage.

To be perfectly precise: possibility B is almost correct - as Undergrowth Champion's first ability is a replacement effect, it loses counters instead of taking damage. It's counters are removed at the same time as damage is dealt, not afterwards.

@Boza: Whether the defending player controls an equipment isn't relevant to the outcome in any way, save for the abilities of the equipment itself. The additional +1/+0 for Kor Bladewhirl doesn't change any interaction here.

Yeah, I really thought the trainer gave +1/+1 for some reason...
