Ugin, the Spirit Dragon's (-X) + Painter's Servant = exile lands as well?

Asked by Kage-no-Raito 9 years ago

So I saw on this site someone talking about using Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and his interaction with Painter's Servant. I thought about this problem or interaction or something.

Lands are considered colorless permanents with no cmc or a cmc of 0. Painter's Servant turn all cards, spells, and permanents into one color, including lands. So wouldn't playing Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and using his -X for any number less than 7 exile all permanents less than X including lands as well other than Ugin (and whatever else may be above 7)?

I feel like this would basically be an interaction that basically wins the game since without any mana, a player most likely can't stop Ugin.

That's what happens, yeah. Ugin's ability doesn't say "nonland", and Painter's Servant gives them a color. Painter's Servant's ability has the capacity to turn a lot of cards into "I win", regardless of whether those cards are already good, okay, or even pretty bad otherwise.

Yes, it would destroy lands.

Furthering that question, If you ultimate Nissa, Worldwaker and those lands are now creature tokens as well as lands, would Ugin's Neg X exile the lands that are also creature tokens?

With the way posting works in the Q&A area on this site, a new comment doesn't bump an old topic to the top of the list. The only people who will know about a new comment in an old "Answered" question topic are users who have already commented in it. It would have been better to start a new question topic, especially since you're asking a brand new question.

But exactly which question are you asking? If Painter's Servant is still involved then the answer is no different from before, and the lands will get exiled because they have a color. If there's no Painter's Servant in your question then the lands won't get exiled because Nissa, Worldwaker doesn't give them a color.

Also, the creature lands aren't tokens. A token is an object on the battlefield not represented by a card. An object can never be both a card and a token. This is an important distinction to make, because some effects care about whether or not something is a token. For example: the lands turned into creatures by Nissa won't be affected by Virulent Plague.

Sorry, I'm new to this site so I wasn't aware or the Q&A postings not getting bumped. And yes, I was asking about the Painter's Servant mixed with Nissa. It's good to know though that Virulent Plague wouldn't affect Nissa's land creatures though since they're not tokens. I suppose I just need to read the cards a little better? Thank you for answering though!
