Triggers. Rest in Peace and Ray of Revelation

Asked by Pheardemons 7 years ago

I want to make sure I have the triggers correct if something like this were to happen in a game. If I have Ray of Revelation in my graveyard, and my opponent plays Rest in Peace do the triggers stack like this:Rest in Peace trigger of exiling all the cards in each player's graveyard goes onto the stack. I cast Ray of Revelation with it's flashback targeting Rest in Peace. Ray of Revelation resolves destroying Rest in Peace, then all of the other cards in all graveyards are exiled with Rest in Peace's ETB trigger.

Correct?

If Rest in Peace is cast, the card will be placed on the stack immediately. If you cast Ray of Revelation for it's flashback cost in response to the Rest in Peace, that spell will be placed on the stack before Rest in Peace. Since a card must be resolved and placed onto the battlefield before it can be destroyed, Ray of Revelation will not destroy Rest in Peace because it will still be on the stack, and Rest in Peace Will still resolve. You can only counter a spell while it is on the stack. You can not destroy a permanent until it is resolved and on the battlefield

I apologize for wording it incorrectly. If Rest in Peace resolves, the ETB trigger goes on the stack. Can I destroy it with Ray of Revelation before all of the cards are exiled?

Yes, it will work just the way you described. Rest in Peace's ability won't exile cards from graveyards until it resolves, and you may respond to it by casting cards - for example from your graveyard, if you have any.

Note that Rest in Peace will be exiled itself, not put into it's owner's graveyard, if it's destroyed, as it's own ability applies to itself. Your spell would also normally go to the graveyard afterwards, as by the time it finished resolving, Rest in Peace isn't on the battlefield anymore - however, since you cast it with Flashback, it will be exiled no matter what. None of this really matters unless something else happens, though, as the rest of the graveyard will be exiled right after.

Also, there aren't "triggers stacking" in any way, as there's only one triggered ability involved.

@220ave220: You're not too wrong, but I think you misunderstood the question slightly - they're not casting Ray of Revelation in response to Rest in Peace, but to it's ETB trigger.

To nitpick your answer, though: Putting a spell on the stack is part of the casting process. Spells will also be placed on top of the topmost object of the stack, so not at all before it - but they will resolve before everything else, as the stack resolves last-in-first-out.
In your scenario (Rest in Peace being on the stack), Ray of Revelation can't be cast, as (what you correctly described) it can only target a permanent, not a spell, and if you're not able to choose a target for all required targets, you can't cast a spell.

Oh. I must have read it wrong. In that case you would be correct as the ETB ability would go on the stack and you would destroy the enchantment, but the ETB ability would still resolve afterwards.
