Triggered abilities and the stack

What to do with Kynaios and Tiro?

I've been working on this deck and I had a question come up during playtesting and I wasn't sure about how some card interactions would play out. Here's the scenario:

I have Arjun, the Shifting Flame and Alhammarret's Archive on the board with 60+ cards in my hand and ~15 left in my deck. As far as I could see I had two options:

(1) Cast Beast Within targeting Alhammarret's Archive

(2) Cast Psychosis Crawler

My questions are about whether either option would work.

(1) Would Arjun's ability create a stack with Beast Within and therefore resolve before the archive was destroyed?

(2) Would Psychosis Crawler's ability kill all my opponents before Arjun's ability fully resolves or would it result in a tie?

PS-- I know the right answer is to cast Laboratory Maniac but he wasn't in the deck when this situation came up. I'll be adding him soon.

None of these would work, not even Laboratory Maniac.

  • You cast a spell. It is put onto the stack as a part of casting.
  • The trigger event of Aryun's second ability has happened, the ability is put onto the stack on top of the spell you just cast
  • Aryun's ability resolves. It is modified by the Archive. You attempt to draw 120 cards from a 75 card library and lose the game.

Because Aryun's ability resolves before the spell you cast, this spell actually has no influence on the outcome of this situation.

For the reasons hyperlocke gave, no spell would save you here.

@hyperlocke: Can you explain why Laboratory Maniac won't work in your opinion? It would replace the event of drawing the 76th card you mentioned with winning the game perfectly fine, as that's the only thing that card realistically does. Note that the Maniac's ability is a replacement effect, not a triggered ability.

The only way you could still lose from drawing from an empty library with both those cards on the board, since both Alhammarret's Archive and Laboratory Maniac replace the event of drawing a card, you need to choose one of those replacement effects to apply, so if you choose the Archive's, you would actually lose.

The reason Laboratory Maniac wouldn't work is casting it doesn't work. As said, no spell would works. Already having Lab Man out would work, as would something like Abundance, but casting them requires them to resolve, at which point losing the game has already happened.

@BlueScope: Oh sure, if the Maniac is already on the field, he will win the game. But I understood that he wanted to cast it, which would lead to him losing.

Ah, I see... yeah, obviously, the Maniac would already have to be on the battlefield. I probably read the question wrong in that regard!

Thanks everyone. I'll keep an eye on this interaction while I'm playing!
