Trample vs Sac

Asked by belugawhaleonthefloor 9 years ago

So Spiked Baloth is a 4/2 trample. If i attack with the baloth and he blocks with Brindle Boar , blocking and sacing, will he take 2 and the baloth dies, or will he take 4 because he sacrificed brindle boar?

your opponent will gain 4 life from the Brindle Boar , then take 4 from the Spiked Baloth , as it has assigned lethal damage to each blocker (which there are none anymore). the Spiked Baloth will live because the Brindle Boar was not on the battlefield during the damage step.

2 will be dealt to the Boar's controller.

Blocking and sacrificing is perfectly valid in this situation, but when faced with a creature with trample, the rest of the damage can be assigned to player. In case of damage with, you always have to apply at least lethal damage to the creatures blocking before you can assign any to the player. The damage is then dealt the way it was assigned, the fact the boar is no longer there is irrelevant.

I believe merrowMania would be right in this situation

702.17c If an attacking creature with trample is blocked, but there are no creatures blocking it when damage is assigned, all its damage is assigned to the player or planeswalker it's attacking.
