Trample over protection?

Asked by maxtero 9 years ago

Example:Swinging with a morphed Sagu Mauler and opponent declares Soldier of the Pantheon to block. Morph Sagu Mauler and now there is a 6/6 trample hexproofer against a 2/1 pro multicolor.

Obviously: no damage go towards Soldier.

possible outcomes: 1. No damage goes through, essentially nothing happens.2. No damage can go towards soldier, so all 6 damage tramples over to player.3. Damage that would be assigned to soldier is negated and only 5 damage tramples over.

Which is correct?

Scenario #3 is correct.

Here's the exact rules for Trample:

  • 702.19b The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking. When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures thats being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage thats actually dealt

The last line is the really important part; you don't need to assign more than what would normally be lethal damage and then assign the rest to the defending planeswalker/player.
