Tooth and Nail and Phyrexian Dreadnought Triggers

Asked by Cube 6 years ago

Context: I am controlling another player's turn using Worst Fears and finding creatures to play with Tooth and Nail. I find Phyrexian Dreadnought and Llanowar Elves. The other creatures on his field add up to power 6 total.

Can I sacrifice the other creatures on the field, Llanowar Elves included. to the Phyrexian Dreadnought even knowing their power does not add up to 12?

You cannot.

Phyrexian Dreadnought has an ETB ability that gives you two options: Either sacrifice it, or sacrifice creatures with total power 12 or greater. If you can't sacrifice enough creatures, you have to sacrifice the Dreadnought instead.

Since it was last printed long before some major rules changes and updates, the ability has been oracled to the following:

When Phyrexian Dreadnought enters the battlefield, sacrifice it unless you sacrifice any number of creatures with total power 12 or greater.

You can.

Because Phyrexian Dreadnought doesn't say you have to sacrifice "other" creatures, you're allowed to sacrifice the Dreadnought, itself, as part of the set of creatures with total power 12 or greater. The set of creatures you're sacrificing will automatically be a legal choice due to the Dreadnought's own power.

Thank you both. First answer clarified the ruling, second addressed my context.
