Tokens. Clones and Devotion

Asked by Profet93 8 years ago

Lets say I have a creature with 2 blue mana symbols in it's CMC, and then I play Clone to copy it or make a token of the creature with Stolen Identity.

Does my devotion to blue become 4 now or is it still 2? Does this differ based on the card used, meaning, would my devotion to blue change if it were a Sakashima the Impostor or Sakashima's Student?

Mana cost is a copiable characteristic. Your devotion to blue will increase by 2, as the game "reads" the cost on your copied creature as .

This was relevant for example when Devotion to Black was a standard deck. The tokens made by Pack Rat are copies of Pack Rat, have a mana cost of and increase your devotion to black by 1 for each copy.

This holds true even if the effect specifies that a card becomes a copy of something except for some characteristic (Sakashima the Impostor, Sakashima's Student, Quicksilver Gargantuan, Lazav, Dimir Mastermind are all examples of cards that do that). All other characteristics of the card, including mana cost, are copied normally, just the specified characteristic isn't.
