Titania, Protector of Argoth question.

Asked by FinchFalcon 8 years ago

Let's say I have Titania in the command zone, and a Ghost Quarter in play. I cast Titania, and my opponent does not respond, allowing her to resolve. Her ETB ability triggers, and goes on the stack. Can I respond to it by sac'ing Ghost Quarter, destroying a target land, triggering her second ability to get a 5/3 token, and then use her ETB ability to pull the ghost quarter back to the battlefield?

You cannot get the Ghost Quarter because when the ETB trigger is placed on the stack, its target is already set to something that was in the graveyard already. You said yourself that you respond to the trigger by sac'ing the Ghost Quarter, meaning it was on the battlefield when the ability triggered. You can choose to sac the Ghost Quarter before/in response to CASTING Titania, Protector of Argoth, and not get the elemental, or you can get the elemental but not the Ghost Quarter.

If a triggered ability has targets, those targets must be chosen at the time it's put onto the stack. In your situation you can't get the benefit of both triggers with a single Ghost Quarter. Either it's not yet in the graveyard when Titania enters the battlefield, or it's already in the graveyard before she's on the battlefield.

Thanks! I wasn't sure when targets had to be chosen.
