Thermo Alchemist triggers

Asked by Dr.Woodenstein 7 years ago

Thermo-Alchemist untaps when you cast a spell. So if I cast Lightning Axe and discard Fiery Temper casting it for its madness cost will I be able to stack the triggers so that he untaps and taps for damage twice or will both untap triggers from both cast spells happen before I can tap Thermo-Alchemist again, thus meaning I can only tap him for damage once in response to casting those two spells?

Let's assume that Thermo-Alchemist is untapped when this begins. There are a couple ways you can do this, but I'm only going to write out one of them.

You cast Lightning Axe, discarding Fiery Temper (into exile per its madness) as the additional cost. Both Madness and Thermo-Alchemist's ability trigger. You put the triggers on the stack in whatever order you desire. In response to both triggers now on the stack, you activate Thermo-Alchemist to deal everyone else 1 damage. Now the two triggers resolve: untapping Thermo-Alchemist and allowing you to cast Fiery Temper for its madness cost. Once you do, Thermo-Alchemist triggers again and goes on the stack. In response to the trigger, you tap him to deal everyone else 1 damage. Then his trigger resolves and untaps him. Then Lightning Axe resolves.

Ok so then you can layer the triggers in order to deal max damage with him. I just wanted to make sure that him and madness weren't a bad combo.

They're fine interactions. The maximum damage you can deal with Thermo-Alchemist here is 3 damage. That's assuming he's untapped before it all begins, and you tap him once everything has resolved.

Objects on the stack resolve one at a time with a round of priority in between. There is no "stacking the abilities correctly" to do this. You just need to make sure Thermo-Alchemist is tapped each time before his untap ability resolves.

If you're referring to my post, I didn't insinuate there was a correct or incorrect way of doing this, I said there are multiple ways of going about it, but the result is the same.

Nope, I was referring to the misconception the OP seemed to have because of their wording in both the question and their confirmation to your answer.

"...will I be able to stack the triggers so that he untaps and taps for damage twice..."

"Ok so then you can layer the triggers in order to deal max damage with him."
