Thermo-Alchemist plus suspend triggers

Asked by Grantley91 6 years ago

Is it possible, if you have a Thermo-Alchemist on the field without summoning sickness, to use its ability during your upkeep, before you cast a suspended Instant or Sorcery (Rift Bolt for example) so that he would untap from the casting? I know that the suspend casting triggers his untap ability, but I just wanted to double check that I could activate him before casting the Bolt. Thanks!

Yes you can, like all spells and abilities (with the exception of mana abilities) suspend goes on the stack and can be responded to.

Okay, I just wasn't positive about activating him either before my untap step concluded or before the beginning of my upkeep buy I guess in response to the trigger makes more sense. Never thought about it like that haha thanks!

You don't have priority to do anything on your untap step or before the suspend trigger goes on the stack so I guess how you were originally thinking wouldn't work. But activating the Thermo-Alchemist in response to the suspend trigger works just fine since the spell isn't cast until suspend resolves.

Note that you can also activate Thermo-Alchemist's activated ability in response to its own triggered ability. The triggered ability triggers every time you cast a spell, even if Thermo-Alchemist is already untapped.
