The Other Deathtouch

Asked by MoFi 6 years ago

Hi!

There are creatures with deathtouch and then there are creatures like Stinkweed Imp. With deathtouch, I know you only need to assign 1 damage to a creature to kill it, but what about creatures with the destroy ability of Stinkweed Imp?

Say I made Stinkweed Imp a 5/5 and then put a Lure on it. If I then attack with it, can it kill 5 blocking creatures? Can its damage be assigned the same way as deathtouch in that regard?

No, you cannot. You must assign lethal damage to a creature before you can move on to assigning damage to the next creature. Deathtouch is treated as lethal damage for this purpose (though, in the strictest rule sense it isn't lethal damage). abilities which will trigger after combat are not taken into consideration.

I see. Because this example uses combat damage and deathtouch is ANY damage. But would a Stinkweed Imp with First Strike kill before it's killed? First Strike counts as a combat damage step, right?

There's also niche options like Pathway Arrows and Viridian Longbow that would let you ping opponent's creatures.

Forget I said that...I just saw it must be "combat damage".

If a Stinkweed Imp has first strike (or double strike) it's ability will trigger during the first strike damage step, killing the creature before the regular combat damage step. If it has double strike, it can kill two creatures as the one from first strike will be dead before you decide how to assign regular combat damage.
