The interaction between City of Traitors and Matter Reshaper/Oblivion Sower

Asked by EpicFreddi 7 years ago

Hello!
I have a rather simple question: When I hit a land with Oblivion Sower or Matter Reshaper, do I need to sacrifice City of Traitors?
(I currently started to play legacy eldrazi so I want to know this before it happens)

No you do not. City of Traitors specifically says when you play a land, which is a special action you can take once per turn. If you were to need to sacrifice City of Traitors, it would be worded as "Whenever another land enters the battlefield under your control, sacrifice City of Traitors" instead of how it's worded now.

No. City of Traitors's ability triggers when you play a land. Playing a land is different from just putting a land onto the battlefield.

When you play a land, you're using a special action for the turn as well as using one of your "land drops." You can normally play one land card per turn, although effects like Exploration can increase that number.

Land cards that you put onto the battlefield during the resolution of a spell or ability aren't "played," and you don't use your "land plays" to put them onto the battlefield.
