Tawnos's Coffin + transform

Asked by PhotogenicParasympathetic 5 years ago

Hey all,

I'm wondering, since Tawnos's Coffin tracks counters on a permanent, does it also track the transformed status of the permanent? For example, if I have a Cunning Bandit that has transformed, and has two ki counters on it, and I exile it with the coffin then untap the coffin, does it return as a Bandit with two counters, or as Azamuki with two counters?

Thanks much!

Nevermind - more careful readings of the oracle text answer this question. This effect is very specifically NOT phasing - the card is exiled, and so are any auras attached to it. Counters are removed from it, and if it's transformed, it would become untransformed and reenter as a new instance of the card. The only difference is that the counters are marked, and placed automatically back when the card returns.

Fun fact: this means that Doubling Season 's effect does apply to cards coming back from Tawnos's Coffin.

It also means that if you somehow targetted one of the transform planeswalkers, like Jace, Telepath Unbound , he would reenter as Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip with Loyalty counters. Not that that's helpful, since he has to exile himself to get back to the side that can USE those loyalty counters, but fun food for thought.
