Targets

Asked by MoFi 7 years ago

Eternal Scourge, hexproof, and any card or ability that references a "target". Here's the confusion:

If I have an Eternal Scourge on the battlefield and the opponent uses, say, Toxic Deluge and gives everything a -3/-3...will Eternal Scourge go into exile? Would it just go the graveyard because it wasn't the specific "target" of the spell? And if, in that scenario, I responded to Toxic Deluge with something like Heroic Intervention, would that save my Eternal Scourge even though it, once again, was not actually the target of the spell?

I'm sure you all see what I'm getting at here. I need help with the word "target'.

1/ ES will go to the grave as a result of Toxic Deluge. It is not targeted by the spell, since its "exile myself" ability will not trigger.

2/ Heroic Intervention will not save ES (nor will it exile it, since it does not target), since indestructible permanents with 0 or less toughness still die and the hexproof part does nothing since Toxic Deluge does not target.

As a general rule, spells and abilities target only when they explicitly use the word "target".

For the third question you didn't ask: If you're opponent targets Eternal Scourge with a spell, let's say Unlicensed Disintegration, and you respond with Heroic Intervention the Scourge will still be exiled because it was initially targeted so the ability triggered, even though you gave it hexproof after the targeting.

Yeah, I kind of got that about Eternal Scourge. It's simply the act of targeting it that exiles it, regardless of what the targeting spell does do. I will continue to try and find an impressively mind-bending use for Eternal Scourge...

Food Chain + Eternal Scourge makes infinite mana, btw.
