Sword of the Animist and Retreat to Emeria interaction

Asked by Argy 8 years ago

Will the following work?

  1. Attach Sword of the Animist to a Creature and attack with it.
  2. Trigger Sword of the Animist, bringing in a Land.
  3. On ETB Land triggers Retreat to Emeria. Ally enters the battlefield, triggering all Ally abilities.

I'm unsure of whether the last step will happen before combat, eg. would all attacking Allies have Lifelink if Lantern Scout was on the field?

it would happen as you describe. Let us assume you have Lantern Scout equipped with Sword of the Animist. That creature is declared as an attacker. The triggered ability is put onto the stack and resolves. Once the land enters the battlefield, the triggered ability from Retreat to Emeria goes onto the stack. If you choose to have the Ally enter the battlefield, Lantern Scout would indeed gain lifelink for that combat. And you would gain life from the damage, because this all happened before the combat damage step. However, the Ally token that entered the battlefield would not be able to attack, because: 1) It has summoning sickness, and 2) the attacking creatures have already been declared.
