Suspend cards and timings

Asked by Fizzz 9 years ago

Hello,

Say I have a Lotus Bloom suspended, and ready to be cast.

I remove the last time counter on my upkeep, allowing me to trigger the cast it without paying the mana cost. I get to remove the time counters on my upkeep, but to cast it, I would need to wait till my first main phase at least... correct?

I am making reference to the Gatherer's rulling: 6/7/2013 As the second triggered ability resolves, you must cast the card if able. Timing restrictions based on the card's type are ignored.

:)

Suspend is actually two abilities. The first one allows you to exile it and makes the time counters go down while the second one allows you to cast it when the last time counter is removed. The second triggered abillity allows you to ignore the normal timing restrictions of casting said spell and makes you cast it right then. So you would just cast the Lotus Bloom in your upkeep. Whenever "Timing restrictions based on the card's type are ignored" you can cast the spell as long as other conditions are met. Ex. your opponent hasn't cast Silence or something like that.

You cast the Lotus Bloom immediately once you remove the last counter, you don't have to wait until your main phase. The ruling you cite makes this explicitly clear.

Sweet, so I could try to destroy the lotus, making the mana ability useless.

@Fizzz you could destroy during the upkeep and make them only be able to use it on instants.

The key thing is that spell timing is based on a system of permissions, not restrictions. Normally you can't cast an Artifact spell during your upkeep because no rule or effect is giving you permission to do so. However, Suspend specifically tells you to cast the spell as that triggered ability (the one that triggers when the last counter is removed) resolves, so you do.
