Sunbird's Invocation + Spring / Mind would let you see 9 cards or 3?

Asked by Fizzz 6 years ago

Hello,

If I cast Spring with an active invocation, would I look at 3 or 9 cards?

I am not sure how the interaction with the new rules work?

New rules from Amonkhet really simplify the split cards:

1/ While not on the stack, any split card has the CMC of both of its halves.
2/ When on the stack, it has the CMC and other properties of only the half you are casting.

So, in your case, you will look at 3 cards with Invocation.

To just add a bit of clarification on what Boza said, this rule applies to cards with fuse as well. In that case, the converted mana cost while on the stack is equal to the converted mana cost of whichever half or halves you are playing. For example, while on the stack, Far / Away can have a converted mana cost of 2 (if you just cast Far), 3 (if you just cast away), or 5 (if you cast both).

I know that's not really responsive, and split cards are fairly rarely used, but I just wanted to be clear!

You also would not be able to cast another Spring you found, because the one in you library would gave a cmc of 9, which is not less than the x=3 from the first one.
